Shaving it all off

Hair frames a face and accentuates facial features so it really enhances a cosmetic look.  It is an integral part of our concepts of youth, beauty and vigor.  Ancient history heroes are often portrayed with long hair like samson, where the long hair is a symbol of strength.  By shaving it all off  you’re diluting you facial features and in a sense losing some facial expressiveness.  Bald men look very similar to each other because the first thing that attracts your attention is their baldness and not their facial features. So in a since they are drowning their facial features with the absence of hair.

If you don’t like your facial features you can go bald, but if you like your facial features and you wish to accentuate them, maximize your hair and your hair style.

One single advantage of shaving is to avoid unnatural hair styles such as the "comb over".

Hair Loss Medications / Hair Loss Remedy

The only medication approved by the FDA to slow hair loss and present a little re growth is finasteride. As with any medication, there are side effects such as allergic reactions including: rash, itching, hives and swelling of the lips and face; problems with ejaculation; breast tenderness and enlargement and testicular pain. There are also certain sexual side effects which occurred in less than 2% of men, such as less desire for sex, difficulty in achieving an erection and decrease in amount of semen.   For more information about this medication, visit the manufacturer's web site.

LaserComb

The Lasercomb is a hair restoration device that sends laser light energy into your hair to strengthen and thicken it.   This restoration device is not FDA approved for hair loss treatment.  On a recent Dateline program, different hair restoration modalities where compared and the Lasercomb was not found to be as effective as hair transplantation.

Rogaine (minoxidil)

Rogaine is a topical medication to be rubbed on the scalp twice daily to stimulate increased blood flow to the hair follicle. When using Rogaine, you should expect to see moderate results which take anywhere from 2 to 4 months to occur.   The manufacturer warns that if the following side effects occur you should discontinue use and see a doctor immediately: chest pain, a rapid heart beat, faintness, or dizziness, sudden, unexplained weight gain, swollen hands or feet, scalp irritation. See the manufacturer's web site for more details.

Wigs & Weaves

Wigs are better worn by women especially if hair transplantation is not going to help their hair loss. Weaves could become expensive for their maintenance and if not done by a skillful person could appear as artificial as toupees. Some patients like to have a transplanted hair line, especially if they have a poor donor area and combine it with a small hair system behind it. That could be a good solution for some men.
